The voice of Jock had not yet been decided, but after approaching Bryan Adams to write a song for the film, it occurred to Duncan to ask Bryan to provide the voice for the lead character.
Bryan called me in March 2011 and invited me to help him write the song. He explained that the song had to be about a dog, but it also had to work independently as a love song. In other words, a song about a dog that's not about a dog. Tough assignment.
My own dog, Charlotte, had passed away a few months earlier due to old age, and I was still missing her terribly. As we were working on the lyric -- intended to be from the dog's point of view -- I kept asking myself, "What would Charlotte say?". I can't speak for Bryan, but my contribution to the lyric was very much inspired by the bond between me and my dog.
The recording and production of the song benefited greatly from the participation of Phil Thornalley, a brilliant British composer, arranger, musician and producer. Going back a few years, Phil is responsible for one of my favourite records, "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia. |
