"Home
Again" is one of the songs from our "lost" period of songwriting,
by which I mean we'd completely lost our way and hadn't a clue what we
were writing about, or why. This was not the kind of song Bryan's fans
were hoping he'd deliver as a follow-up to Reckless. The lyric
was forced. We were trying a little too hard. In
my opinion, it just didn't work. Adams and I wrote most of "Home Again" in March 1986, at Zomba Studios in north London (we finished the song in Vancouver a few months later). We'd gone to London so Bryan could spend time with his English girlfriend, Vicki Russell. I love London, so it didn't take much convincing when Bryan suggested we spend a month there, despite the fact it was one of the coldest English winters on record! I rented an apartment just off Kensington High Street. Bryan stayed with Vicki. We met every morning at Zomba and spent 10 or 12 hours each day working on songs for the "Into The Fire" album. Creatively it was a struggle. We put in the hours, but we weren't getting results. The best song written at Zomba was "Victim Of Love", but nearly everything else was discarded. Aside from spending time with Vicki, there's another reason Bryan chose Zomba Studios. One of Zomba's recording rooms was permanently occupied by producer Mutt Lange, who Bryan had been courting for a year or more. Bryan was unable to convince Mutt to participate on "Into The Fire", but he did manage to secure Mutt's services for the next album, "Wakin' Up The Neighbours". |

Lyrics: | When I
was younger My life was torn asunder And I was carried far away Now somewhere in the distance I feel a strange insistence I long to be there once again The day is drawing nearer The time has come to leave here The feeling just keeps gettin' stronger every day So I pray for the moment when I'll be with you And all that we hoped for is all comin' true When the time we've spent waitin' is finally through I'll be home again I can still remember Days that never ended Standin' on a distant shore With every raindrop fallin' I hear the thunder callin' Like so many times before Sometimes in the darkness I hear what my heart says Maybe one day I'll know what that feelin's for So I wait for the moment when I'll be with you And all that we hoped for is all comin' true When the time is spent waitin' is finally through I'll be home again When you're out there on your own It can chill you to the bone There's a cold wind blowin' But it feels good knowin' The worst is over now - I'm finally goin' home Solo So I pray for the moment when I'll be with you And all that we hoped for is all comin' true When the time we've spent waitin' is finally through I'll be home again It's gettin' stronger Can't wait any longer I'll be home again |
