When I write songs with Bryan we usually start with an empty page ... in other words, the song is created "from scratch" during the writing session. Other times, one of us will come up with a fragment of lyric or melody to help us get started. And on very rare occasions, one of us will have an entire section of a song, like an entire verse or chorus, already completed. In the case of "I Still Miss You", I contributed a complete chorus and Bryan contributed a complete verse. With some minor adjustments we had a finished song! I wrote the chorus in 2001 or thereabouts, and because it had a "country" feel I sent it to a songwriter friend of mine in Nashville. I like country music, but I haven't had much experience writing in that style, so believe me when I say I was a bit shy about emailing my silly little idea to one of the best "country" songwriters in the world. When he didn't reply at all, it was like, "Ouch" ... maybe it's not as good as I thought! It was with equal trepidation that I emailed the idea to Bryan a few years later (once I'd recovered from the first rebuke). To my surprise Bryan quickly wrote a couple of cute verses and started performing the song "live". Audience reaction was favorable, so Bryan took it a step further and included the song on his Bare Bones CD. So ... an inauspicious start to a happy ending. |
