In the original 1990 film version of "Pretty Woman" Julia Roberts is seen in a bathtub at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, wearing headphones and singing along to the Prince song, "Kiss". For the 2018 Broadway version of "Pretty Woman" director Jerry Mitchell wanted to try something different. He briefly considered "Summer of 69" in place of "Kiss", but in the end, he asked us to write an original song for the bathtub scene ... something with nonsense lyrics, where Vivian could simply sing "hoo, hoo, ya, ya" -- or something like that. With such clear instructions the song nearly wrote itself! The bathtub scene is short, so we only wrote one verse, about 40 seconds of music and lyric. Everyone loved the song and asked for a full-length version for possible inclusion on the "Pretty Woman" cast album. So, we simply doubled the verse and chorus and added a drum break to connect the two sections. Instant song ... except the track still came in under the two-minute mark. Oh well. Samantha Barks and the Pretty Woman orchestra recorded the song at the Power Station studio in New York, but it wasn't included on the (2018) cast album. Not wanting the song to go to waste, Bryan recorded it for his "Shine A Light" album (2019) and then again, a third recording (2022) for his "Pretty Woman" album ... the best version yet, in my opinion. |
