This is one of the last songs we wrote for "Pretty Woman: The Musical". The show was already up-and-running at the Oriental Theatre in Chicago, but the director asked us for a new song for this particular scene, to replace our two previous unsuccessful attempts at writing something appropriate for this spot in the script. It was a tough song to nail down. Bryan and I had been writing (and re-writing, and re-re-writing) every day for two years. Personally, I was starting to burn out. I was physically and mentally exhausted, my nerves were frayed. The director -- perhaps feeling the pressure in his home-town of Chicago, not to mention our New York "opening" in a few months time -- was becoming increasingly less diplomatic in his delivery. As a result, I "lost it" on a few occasions (sorry!). It had been fun in the beginning, something new and interesting, a welcome challenge, but by opening night in Chicago much of the fun had gone out of it. I was ready to quit ... but Bryan talked me off the ledge and we went back to work on the music. Somehow we managed to cobble this one last song together. The original musical arrangement for "Luckiest Girl In The World" -- the one that's still in the show years later -- was a rock-gospell number. In contrast, Bryan performs it here as a gentle ballad, just piano and vocal, no adornment. Despite the harsh words above, what's always been joyful about "Pretty Woman" is interacting with members of the cast and orchestra. Hugely talented young people, dedicated, hard-working, and always a source of inspiration. Nate, Matt, Rene, Jake, Sammy, Susan, Brian, Anna ... and too many more to mention: I've enjoyed rehearsing and hanging out with you in Chicago, New York, London, Hamburg and beyond. |

Lyrics: | Don't want this feelin' to go away Just think about where you were yesterday It's so amazin', can it be true? That a billionaire would bother with a girl like you You've got money to spend You've got Champagne on ice There's a smile on your face You're gettin' treated real nice It's starting to feel like you're the luckiest girl in the world Well, you might think you've got it made But always start by makin' sure that you get paid He said two - you said four You settled on three and that's a whole lot more Let me remind you, that it might not be fair But the rent's gettin' paid and there's money to spare It's starting to feel like you're the luckiest girl in the world Ah, it's a long, long way from a small town in Georgia To Beverly Hills, CA And if this keeps on goin' I can hardly imagine What you might see, where you might be When you walk out that door in six days Somebody pinch me, it's overdue Darlin', you deserve this after all you've been through He could get a million girls for free Anyone he wants Yeah, it's easy to see Look at this, here you are on the top floor Everything is First Class Everything is top drawer I'm starting to feel like you're the luckiest girl in the world Oh yeah, it's starting to feel like you're the luckiest girl in the world Yeah, you're the luckiest girl in the world! |
