The London cast of "Pretty Woman"
Piccadilly Theatre - February 2020

For this scene the director's original request called for a Country song (Vivian grew up in rural Georgia).

In fact, we wrote two different Country songs for this spot, approximately a year part, one titled "Why Me" and the other titled, "It Never Works Out That Way".

I liked both songs, but the director had us write yet a third song. As someone once said, "Broadway" isn't writing, it' re-writing.

Back-story:
"Pretty Woman: The Musical", opened in Chicago and New York in 2018, Hamburg Germany in 2019, London England in 2020 and Milan Italy in 2021.

A USA touring production hit the road in 2021, stopping in every major American city and continuing into 2022, and a UK cast toured Engand, Ireland and Scotland for most of 2024.

Bryan Adams and I spent three years writing the 21 songs that appear in the production ... a typical time-line for a Broadway show. A "cast album" was recorded in New York in 2018 with nine musicians and 19 singers.

The audio above is Bryan's interpretation of "This Is Your Life", recorded 2021-2022 at the Warehouse Studio in Vancouver Canada.

Lyrics: The first guy you loved was a loser
The second guy was even worse
If there was a bum within fifty miles
You were drawn to him like a curse

You followed bum number three to L.A.
He left you there on your own
So there you were - no friends, no money
Too ashamed to go home
Ya, this is your life

This is your life
Take a look at your life

You worked at a couple of fast-food joints
Parked cars, did whatever you could
That's when you met Kit
She worked the streets
She made it sound so good

So one day you did it
You cried the whole time
You were coming apart at the seams
It's not like anybody plans it - no
It wasn't your childhood dream
Ya, this is your life

This is your life
Take a look at your life

Ain't it funny how the bad stuff
Is so easy to believe
You know, it wears you down
And some days it really hurts

If you really want to change things dig in and find a way
So don’t let anyone else but you
Define a woman's worth

This is your life
The story of your life

This is your life
The story of your life
