Sorting out the organ part for "State Of Mind". Manta Studios, Toronto, November 1979. >
As songwriters and arrangers, in 1979 Adams and I hadn't yet found a style of our own.  Consequently, we often borrowed liberally from others.

In the case of "State Of Mind", much of the song's feel and structure was lifted from "Hold The Line", the hit single from Toto's self-titled 1978 debut album:

Bryan and I wrote "State Of Mind" at Manta Studios in Toronto, during the recording sessions for Bryan's first album. I played keyboards and drums, Bryan played guitar, and Tom Szczesniak is on bass. Eric Robertson scored the horn arrangement (Eric is best known for his work with Roger Whittaker and Nana Mouskouri).
Lyrics: I know that you're curious so don't be so serious
You know there's no cause for alarm
When you're down - out - left here in doubt
All the things that are right all go wrong

Love is a state of mind
It's keepin' us both alive
Sometimes it's hard to find
When love is a state of mind

Now wait just a minute you know I ain't finished
So don't ya go carrying on
Cuz I'm down out left here in doubt
Well we tried but we can't get along

Love is a state of mind
It's keepin' us both alive
Sometimes it's hard to find
When love is a state of mind
