When
I owned Armoury Studios, one of our recording clients was the group "Chicago"
(with my good friend Bruce Fairbairn producing). It was December 1994,
and Chicago
were
recording in the big room at the back of the studio, while
I was in the smaller suite at the front, writing songs with Ozzy Osbourne.
I'm a huge fan of Ozzy and Chicago, so I felt like a kid in a candy
store!
One evening we all went out for dinner: myself, my wife Rachel, the guys
from Chicago, Ozzy, and Bruce Fairbairn. What a night! After 35 years in
the music business my wife and I still count that as one of our most fun
and memorable experiences, ever.
Jimmy Pankow and Ozzy
are
funnier than John Cleese and Robin Williams, and together they had us all in stitches
for the whole evening. I've never laughed so hard in my life!
A few days later Robert Lamm came into my office, after Ozzy had gone home
for the day. He asked me if I'd consider writing some songs with him.
I was floored! I've been a Chicago fan since I was seventeen. If you'd told me in 1979 that one day I'd meet Robert Lamm, and he'd want to write
with me, I would have died on the spot.
A month or two later Robert flew up from LA, and we spent a week together. One of the songs we wrote was "Love Of My Life",
which Robert recorded for his 1999 solo album "In My Head".
Robert is one of the nicest people I've met ... a true gentleman
and a class act. Not to mention one of the most distinctive voices
in the music industry!
