Magnum was formed in Birmingham England in 1972 by guitarist Tony Clarkin
and vocalist Bob Catley.
I really enjoyed the time I spent writing with Tony. He was a quiet, humble
man, and an excellent guitarist.
We wrote two songs, but only one of them was included on the Goodnight LA album (1990).
I must confess, I wasn't familiar with Magnum's music until I got a call from Graham Carpenter, an A&R man at PolyGram UK. Graham put me in touch with Magnum’s manager, Keith Baker. Keith and I compared schedules, booked some dates, and a few weeks later Tony flew over to Vancouver. He stayed four days, from October 30 to November 2, 1989.
The difference with Tony was, he wasn't at all opposed to working with me. Some groups were dragged to my studio by their managers or record companies, kicking and screaming, not wanting to collaborate outside the band. But Tony was genuinely keen from the start, which was a nice change.
