In 1985 Bryan Adams and I wrote a song called "Temptation", which we sent to Rod Stewart. I thought it was a good song ... Bryan thought it was a good song ... Rod thought it was a good song ... except for the chorus, which Rod hated.
Rod wrote a new lyric and melody for the chorus, changing the title to "Another Heartache". He sent us a recording of the new version, but after listening to it, Adams and I still thought our original chorus was stronger.
We discussed it with Rod over the phone, but there was no changing his mind. He was "married" to the new chorus. In fact, Rod was so confident that his chorus was better than ours that he promised to pay $10,000 to the charity of our choice if the song proved not to be a hit.
To make a long story short, the song did not fare well, stalling at #45 and #52 on the Billboard charts.
I beleive Rod paid up.
