John Skrine (c.1620-c.1680)
John Skrine (my 8x great-grandfather) was the eldest son of Henry Skrine (c.1590-1659) and Edith (maiden name unknown). From the book "Skrine of Warleigh" (1936) by E. W. Ainley Walker: John Skrine's father-in-law, William Mountjoy (my 9x great-grandfather) was Lord Mayor of Biddeston St. Peter's, near Corsham, Wiltshire. William Mountjoy purchased the Manor of Biddeston St. Peter's in 1626 from Sir Gilbert Prynne of Alington and his son-in-law Sir George Hastings of Gray's Inn. |

John Skrine (c.1660-1697)
John Skrine (my 7x great-grandfather) was the son of John Skrine (c.1620-c.1680) and Mary Mountjoy (c.1636-c.1690). John Skrine of Warleigh and The Middle Temple purchased the manor of Forde, presumably from his great-uncle Thomas Skrine (b. circa 1585) who had purchased it in 1634. Forde was the strip of land directly south of Bathford, and adjacent to the River Avon. When combined with the manor of Warleigh (drectly south of Forde) this became a substantial land holding. John Skrine obtained the family coat of arms in November 1682. They were granted by Sir William Dugdale, Garter, and Sir Henry St. George, Clarenceau (Grants and Certificates, Stowe MS 677, Wahsbourne, “Skrine, Somers. and Suss”). From Marriage Licences issued by the Archbishop of Canterbury, 1679-1694 - 25 Jun 1690: John Skrine, of the Midd. Temple, Lond., Gent., Bachr, abt 30, & Elizabeth Dickson, of St Paul, Covent Garden, Midd., Spr, abt 16, with consent of her father; at St Paul's afsd. |
