I can't remember who we originally wrote this song for ... it might have been Kim Carnes or Tina Turner, although neither of them recorded it. Eventually our demo found it's way to Bonnie Raitt, who recorded a version in 1984. It featured a superb cameo vocal by Fleetwood Mac member Christine McVie.
We were sent a cassette of Bonnie's finished recording prior to its intended release. I remember being really happy with the production and the performance, in particular the vocal interplay between Bonnie and Christine, which was magical. The musicians also delivered a solid basic track.
Then we got the bad news.
Bonnie had parted ways with her record company, and the company had refused to turn over the session tapes! Our song wasn't going to be released after all.
Bonnie did eventually record another version of "No Way To Treat A Lady", but it lacks the energy and "loose feel" of the first recording ... and Christine McVie does not appear on the remake.
It's hard to complain when an artist as amazing as Bonnie Raitt covers one of your songs, but it's a bit disappointing to know how good it could have been! |
