Originally written in 1983 for the film "A Night In Heaven", the song "Heaven" later appeared on Bryan Adams' Reckless album (1984). That album, and Bryan's "Heaven" single, both reached #1 in the USA and Canada in 1985.

I was quite surprised the first time I heard DJ Sammy's "dance" version of "Heaven" on my car radio in April or May 2002. I didn't even know the song had been covered!  At first I thought the heavily synthesized arrangement sounded dated, a throw-back to the mid-80s production style of Stock, Aitken and Waterman. After a few listens however, it began to grow on me.

Adams and I traded emails during the summer of 2002, incredulous as the song climbed higher and higher on the U.S. charts (it eventually peaked at #8). Then, in the autumn of that year we were delighted to see the single reach the very top of the UK charts -- in fact it entered the British charts at #1, a rare occurrence.

DJ Sammy's version of "Heaven" also charted in Canada, Brazil, Slovenia, The Netherlands, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and a dozen other countries.

Do (Dominique van Hulst)

"Heaven Unplugged" was released as a single on Patriot Records/BMG in December 2002.  The track, retitled "Heaven - Piano Mix", was also included on her debut full-length album, released July 2004.

It's interesting to read Do's perspective on the various versions of "Heaven" that were recorded in 2001 and 2002, including her own solo release without DJ Sammy (click here).

Lyrics: Baby, you're all that I want
When you're lying here in my arms
I'm finding it hard to believe
We're in heaven

We're in heaven

Oh, thinking about all our younger years
There was only you and me
We were young and wild and free

Now nothing can take you away from me
We've been down that road before
But that's over now
You keep me coming back for more

Baby, you're all that I want
When you're lying here in my arms
I'm finding it hard to believe
We're in heaven

And love is all that I need
And I found it there in your heart
It isn't too hard to see
We're in heaven

We're in heaven

Now nothing could change what you mean to me
Oh, there's a lot that I could say
But just hold me now
'Cause our love will light the way

Baby you're all that I want
When you're lying here in my arms
I'm finding it hard to believe
We're in heaven

And love is all that I need
And I found it there in your heart
It isn't too hard to see
We're in heaven
Heaven

Now our dreams are coming true
Through the good times and the bad
I'll be standing there by you

We're in heaven

And love is all that I need
And I found it there in your heart
It isn't too hard to see
We're in heaven, oh

Oh
We're in heaven
